Jack Johnston
Architect & Certified Remodeler
Jack Johnston earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1971 and subsequently became a registered architect and licensed contractor. Jack started his own remodeling company in 1975, when the United States was in a recession and the housing market was ripe for revitalization. In 1978, he moved from Sacramento, Calif. to Salem, Ore. to find a more fitting location to raise his family and grow the business.
In 1994, Jack was one of the first remodelers in Salem to achieve the Certified Remodeler (CR) status from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’s CR program provides comprehensive testing in areas of business management, ethical conduct and technical skills.
The following year, Jack accepted a job offer as an architect and remodeling consultant with a large remodeling firm in Salem. He spent three years working for that company, then returned to the world of self-employment in 1998. Since that time, Jack has taken Golden Rule Remodeling & Architecture, Inc. from a home-based business to a full-scale design-build remodeling firm.
Jack is skilled in design, drafting, site inspection, project supervision and client relations. His project experience ranges from patio covers to full-house renovations and additions. He specializes in creating efficient “flow of space,” or finding more usable space within the existing square footage of a house.
Jack’s personal interests include railroads and woodworking. He enjoys visiting historic places with his wife, and helping his kids and grandkids work on their homes and yards. Jack also enjoys camping in the great outdoors, where he can reflect on life and continue to dream big.
