[...] Escaping to a place that gives a sense of peace at the end of the day is always a desirable thing. This is a place where chaos comes to an end & serenity begins. This retreat, for many people is the Master Suite. Whether you have 15 minutes to unwind, or an hour to relax, the need for a private master suite has become common among many. We are all so busy, and have so much stress in our lives; we deserve a space that allows for renewal, relaxation & regeneration! There are a multitude of choices to be made in planning a bathroom “Master Suite.” Configuration, bathing & shower areas and material selections are just a few of the choices in creating a retreat. When planning the configuration there are many space considerations & specific codes that need to be followed in order to create a functional design. Amenities have grown in size & the square footage desired for the master bath has increased as well. If a bath and separate shower is preferred then ample space will be needed. When choosing a tub it is extremely important to first visit a showroom & test the different sizes. Don’t focus too much on features or shapes until you have first decided the length & width that fits you best! Many clients are choosing to eliminate the tub from the master bath & use the space to create a larger shower area. Full body, multi-head shower fixtures nicely offer a spa environment. The addition of a steam generator can offer even more luxury and relaxation too! Safety is also a consideration to successfully planning the bathroom. Grab bars in shower areas have become more common along with universal design principles which can accommodate wheelchair access. Double sinks at vanity areas are great for master bathrooms. This is another item that can require a good amount of space. The National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends at least 36” between the centerlines of bathroom sinks. By following this guideline the vanity area could require at least 66” of space. Once the configuration is determined the material selections begin. There is a vast assortment of surfacing materials on the market today & prices vary greatly! The selections & combinations are endless, ranging from solid surface products, ceramic tile, glass, fiberglass, marble, limestone, slate, granite, wood & more! Any theme can be created & the variety of choices allows for creating a personalized space. Before beginning the design process with an Interior Designer or Architect, make a needs list. This list is very simple so don’t be focused on design details at this point. Let the professional guide you through those. The list should simply state what you currently like about your space & what you don’t. A trained professional will take your needs, sculpt them with your budget and create a timeless, functional design! By Jillian Renner [...]
